Marianne Nicolson: House of Ghosts / Vancouver Art Gallery / January 6th, 2009 / 1906

Marianne Nicolson, a member of the Dzawada’enuxw Tribe of the Kwakwaka’wakw Nation, first came to prominence in 1998 when she scaled a vertical rock face in Kingcome Inlet to paint a 28 x 38-foot pictograph—the first in the inlet for over sixty years—to mark the continued vitality of her ancestral village of Gwa’yi. In a similarly monumental gesture, Nicolson’s site-specific project The House of the Ghosts imaginatively transforms the Georgia Street façade of the Vancouver Art Gallery into a Northwest Coast ceremonial house. Using high-powered lighting, Nicolson will project the vision of a house front and totem poles onto the Gallery façade from dusk to dawn every night. By altering the Gallery in this way, the building itself becomes a site of cultural exchange, emphasizing its importance as a transformative space while wryly commenting on its historic role as a courthouse and jail where, decades ago, First Nations peoples were punished for defying the government’s Potlach ban. Nicolson sees this work as a positive and symbolic reassertion of a culture in a place where it was once forbidden, in a gesture that speaks to the vibrancy of Kwakwaka’wakw culture and the need to sustain it.

The House of the Ghosts is a site-specific artwork illuminating the Georgia Street facade of the Vancouver Art Gallery from dusk to dawn every night.

This exhibition, culled from local photographic archives, offers insights to Vancouver history from the late 1950s to the mid 1970s. The title refers to an important Canadian television personality at that time and her program “Juliette and Friends”. The selection of eclectic images highlights photography that was produced from commercial purposes, business records and paying customers. Featured here are photographs from the archives of CBC Vancouver, the commercial photographer Dick Oulton, and the Penthouse Cabaret Night Club. Primarily comprised of interior shots, this exhibition shows Vancouver at a time of cosmopolitan ambitions and North American suburban ideals. The city’s lively downtown entertainment scene attracted celebrities from around the world, many of who also appeared in local CBC television productions. These archives bring to light the significance of collections as documents of cultural history. Juliette and Friends offers clues to a key period in Vancouver’s development and at the same time provokes questions about the utilitarian functions of photographic production outside the dialogues of photographic fine art.

shrink-wrapped considers how a grouping of artists and intellectuals have responded to images of war and the image world since the invasion of Iraq in 2003. Conflating references, representations, and media images from the war with references to and images and objects from the commodity and luxury culture industry, the works are situated in a space where contemporary art and political protest overlap. The surface of the works—which include photomontages, montages, broadsheets, and travel brochures—communicate boldly and graphically, like that of agitprop, while also negotiating with issues of dissemination, distribution, and display.

Included in the exhibition are Adel Abidin’s brochure installation from Abidin Travels (2006); a selection of photomontages from Martha Rosler’s Bringing the War Home: House Beautiful, new series (2004); Gail Wight and Retort’s Afflicted Powers project (2006); and new works by local artists Abbas Akhavan and A.S. Dhillon.

WACK! Art and the Feminist Revolution is the first comprehensive, international survey of a remarkable body of work that emerged from the dynamic relationship between art and feminism between 1965 and 1980, a time in which a majority of feminist activism and art-making occurred across the globe. The exhibition brings together the work of 120 artists to examine the international foundations and impact of feminism on art.

WACK! Art and the Feminist Revolution is organized by The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. The exhibition is curated by Connie Butler, the Robert Lehman Foundation Chief Curator of Drawings at The Museum of Modern Art, New York.

Marianne Nicolson: House of Ghosts / Vancouver Art Gallery / January 8th, 2009 / 1906

This site-specific project is organized by the Vancouver Art Gallery and curated by Daina Augaitis, chief curator/associate director. It is generously supported by the Audain Foundation.

Shrink Wrapped / Or Gallery / January 8th, 2009 / 2239

shrink-wrapped considers how a grouping of artists and intellectuals have responded to images of war and the image world since the invasion of Iraq in 2003.

Dhillon.

With support from the Alvin Balkind Fund for Student Curatorial Initiatives, the Killy Foundation, the Department of Art History, Visual Art, and Theory, and the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery at The University of British Columbia.

Relying on razor-sharp wit and lightning-fast reflexes, two teams of performers are pit against each other in competitive improv matches. Using audience suggestions to fuel scenes, teams must create totally improvised situations on the spot.

Each TheatreSports match is overseen by a referee. More than just a whimsical host, the ref will slap the improvisers with penalties & jabs or reward them with bonuses as he sees fit. And round after grueling round, the audience votes for the best scenes & the sharpest improv.

Marianne Nicolson: House of Ghosts / Vancouver Art Gallery / January 9th, 2009 / 1906

This site-specific project is organized by the Vancouver Art Gallery and curated by Daina Augaitis, chief curator/associate director. It is generously supported by the Audain Foundation.

Shrink Wrapped / Or Gallery / January 9th, 2009 / 2239

shrink-wrapped considers how a grouping of artists and intellectuals have responded to images of war and the image world since the invasion of Iraq in 2003.

Dhillon.

With support from the Alvin Balkind Fund for Student Curatorial Initiatives, the Killy Foundation, the Department of Art History, Visual Art, and Theory, and the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery at The University of British Columbia.

Shakespeare’s Songbook
The Newberry Consort with
Ellen Hargis (soprano)
William Hite (tenor)
Paul O’Dette (lute)
David Douglass (violin)
Friday, January 9 (8:00 pm)

Shakespeare loved music, using it to establish a mood or an entertaining diversion. Ellen Hargis, “the Baroque music diva” (New Yorker) and Paul O’Dette, “genius” of the lute (Globe and Mail), join one of the finest early music groups, The Newberry Consort, to perform the songs, ballads and dance tunes that once enriched the Bard’s plays and delighted the patrons of London’s Globe Theatre.

“The Newberry Consort is one of America’s most innovative and accomplished early music ensembles.” FANFARE

Marianne Nicolson: House of Ghosts / Vancouver Art Gallery / January 10th, 2009 / 1906

This site-specific project is organized by the Vancouver Art Gallery and curated by Daina Augaitis, chief curator/associate director. It is generously supported by the Audain Foundation.

Shrink Wrapped / Or Gallery / January 10th, 2009 / 2239

shrink-wrapped considers how a grouping of artists and intellectuals have responded to images of war and the image world since the invasion of Iraq in 2003.

Dhillon.

With support from the Alvin Balkind Fund for Student Curatorial Initiatives, the Killy Foundation, the Department of Art History, Visual Art, and Theory, and the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery at The University of British Columbia.

The original idea of Burn the Floor came in a burst of colour and energy. I was witness to a scintillating display of Ballroom and Latin dancing at Sir Elton John’s 50th birthday celebration at the Hammersmith Palais Ballroom, London in 1997. In the midst of a glamorous costumed evening, Sir Elton, the ultimate host, the party in full swing, 16 young energetic dancers mesmerized the packed room in a 10 minute dance display. For me it was just the spark of an idea then. I was soon to meet and discover the Ballroom dance world, its people with their intensity, commitment, discipline and work ethic. These ideas would become my inspiration. It was the dancers themselves that provided the real motivation, their good nature, openness and sheer talent combined with a burning passion and love of dance. It was 18 months before I gathered the first team together, a core of dancers and designers in a London ten day workshop late in 1998. A quest to combine the natural chemistry and personal values of the individual dancers with aspects of modern theatre technology. Small pieces of choreography from Anthony Van Laast, costume ideas from Bonita Bryg and lighting by Patrick Woodroffe, set by Marc Fischer, became our original design team; we rehearsed and stitched together the initial pieces day after day at Pinewood Studios. The results were spectacular on film, creating strong images and magnifying personalities.

THEATRESPORTS® is high-action short form improv full of comic vengeance!
