NYC Organist Mike LeDonne celebrates the release of his new CD “The Groover” (HighNote/Savant Records) March 26 and 27, 2010 Doors 7:00 pm Show 8:30 pm RESERVATIONS 604-738-1959 or reservations@cellarjazz.com Mike LeDonne is an exceptional pianist and organist who has won praise not only from critics but from master musicians: the late Oscar Peterson picked him as one of his favorite pianists of today. In 1988 LeDonne joined the Milt Jackson Quartet, spending 11 incredible years working with the vibraphone master and eventually becoming music director for the group. LeDonne first took up the organ at age 10 and when he was 14, his father bought him his first Hammond B-3, an instrument that he says “has the soul built right in.” In 2000 he sat in on a tribute concert at Smoke to “The Mighty Burner”—the late organ legend Charles Earland. It went so well that club owner Paul Stache scheduled Mike for a five-week Tuesday night run, and he’s been there ever since. At the Cellar Restaurant, LeDonne plays for two nights only joined by an incredible cast of Vancouver musicians including Cory Weeds on tenor sax, Oliver Gannon on guitar, and Jesse Cahill on drums. These musicians are some of Vancouver’s, if not Canada’s, finest.

Experience the magical transition of day into night. On the two-kilometre, lantern-lit trail watch for sprites, shadowy forms and glistening eyes; breathe in the fragrance of the cedars as you return to gather around the fire to watch the stars; beat drums and celebrate the night. Walk, cycle or bus (#25 and #33) to the park. Bring your boots and flashlights, start your journey between 7 - 9 pm. Give one hour to complete the quest. The Royal Astronomical Society will have their telescopes out; Science World with interactive displays; and Girl Guides with a concession stand; and much more! Registration not required. Presented by Metro Vancouver, Pacific Spirit Park Society and other community organizations. Wheelchair / stroller accessible.

This programme features four masters. Three are among the Choir’s favourite composers from three musical epochs: Classic (Mozart), Romantic (Schubert) and Modern (Schafer). The fourth master is Dante Alighieri, the 14th century Italian author of The Divine Comedy. He provided the text of an atmospheric new work for choir and strings by brilliant Canadian composer R Murray Schafer. Based on selections from Dante’s Volume III - Paradiso - the new piece is entitled The Love that Moves the Universe. It is another world premiere, and the third of the Choir’s six 40th anniversary commissions supported by the Arts Partners in Creative Development. Jon Washburn leads the singers and orchestra in this premiere and also in two intimate masterpieces by Schubert (Mass in G Major) and Mozart (Solemn Vespers, KV 339).
