All's Well That Ends Well opens Studio Stage at Bard on the Beach / Vanier Park / July 3rd, 2009

Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival continues its 20th season, launching its Douglas Campbell Studio Stage programming with the romantic drama All’s Well That Ends Well. It plays Tuesdays through Sundays in the intimate 240-seat Studio Stage tent in Vanier Park from June 25 through September 19, 2009. All’s Well That Ends Well is directed by Rachel Ditor who is making her Bard directorial debut. Othello and The Comedy of Errors continue at the same time in the Mainstage tent. All’s Well That Ends Well follows the adventures of a rejected bride as she sets out to secure her husband’s love. When the King grants lowborn Helena her choice of husband, she chooses her secret love Bertram, son of her mistress the Countess. After the ceremony, the snobbish Bertram flees and sends Helena this challenge – get the ring off his finger and conceive a child by him and he will be her husband. Determination, ingenuity and a little sexual trickery are needed before “all ends well” for the jilted bride.

The Number 14 originated in Vancouver as the brainchild of founding Artistic Director Wayne Specht along with Roy Surette, currently the Artistic Director at the CentaurTheatre in Montreal. Stemming from a series of improvisational skits and showcasing the talents of some of Vancouver’s most loved physical performers, this slice of urban city life has been wowing audiences around the world since its debut in 1992.

Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival opens its 20th Anniversary Season with the powerful tragedy Othello enjoying its first-ever staging at the Festival. It runs Tuesdays to Sundays in the 520-seat open-ended Mainstage tent in Vanier Park from May 28 to September 25, 2009. In his 18th season with Bard, Artistic Associate Dean Paul Gibson returns to direct following a year’s hiatus since Romeo and Juliet in 2007. One of Shakespeare’s best-known tragedies, Othello reveals how jealousy, prejudice, deceit and betrayal can drive innocent love to tragedy. Angry that the noble moor Othello has promoted inexperienced Cassio instead of him, Iago sets out to exact revenge. In a dazzling display of villainy, Iago convinces Othello that his new bride Desdemona has been unfaithful with Cassio, driving Othello to rage, madness and murder. The play begins with Iago (Bob Frazer) declaring to his fellow Venetian Roderigo (Parnelli Parnes) that he will seek vengeance on both Othello (Michael Blake) and Cassio (Kevin MacDonald). Othello has secretly married Desdemona (Naomi Wright), and Iago sends Roderigo, who is himself in love with the new bride, to tell her father Brabantio (Neil Maffin) that she has eloped with the moor. Furious that his daughter has married a black man, Brabantio appeals to the Duke (Shawn Macdonald), claiming that Desdemona has been bewitched. DODGER Matt Drake (singer/songwriter/producer) the creative force behind DODGER, slaves like a zombie possessed in his home studio. Bert began performing his unique synthesis of folk, blues and jazz on the folk club scene of the early 1960s, having hitch-hiked to London from his hometown of Edinburgh. His first album, Bert Jansch (played on a borrowed guitar and recorded on a reel-to-reel tape deck) was legendarily sold to the Transatlantic label for £100. On its release in April 1965 Bert Jansch caused a sensation for its innovative guitar technique and powerful songs and it has been phenomenally influential to this day, cited by legions of guitar players (famous and otherwise) as a major inspiration. Bert Jansch was followed by It Don't Bother Me, and the also hugely influential Jack Orion, where Bert was already exploring innovative treatments of the traditional folk ballad form, something he took further with Pentangle, the unique acoustic supergroup he formed with John Renbourn, Jacqui McShee, Terry Cox and Danny Thompson. Pentangle made six albums and enjoyed an unprecedented degree of success for an acoustic band, touring the world including several appearances at London's Royal Albert Hall and Carnegie Hall in New York. After Pentangle split in 1973, Bert returned to a prolific solo career.

Green Day is an American rock trio formed in 1987. The band has consisted of Billie Joe Armstrong (vocals, guitar), Mike Dirnt (bass guitar, vocals), and Tré Cool (drums, percussion) for the majority of its existence. Green Day was originally part of the punk rock scene at 924 Gilman Street in Berkeley, California. Its early releases for independent record label Lookout! Records earned them a grassroots fanbase, some of whom felt alienated when the band signed to a major label. Nevertheless, its major label debut Dookie (1994) became a breakout success and eventually sold over 10 million copies in the U.S. and 15 million worldwide. Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival continues its 20th season with the fun-filled, deliciously farcical The Comedy of Errors. It plays Tuesdays through Sundays in the 520-seat open-ended Mainstage tent in Vanier Park from June 10 through September 26, 2009 in repertory with the currently running production of Othello. David Mackay returns to direct following last season’s hugely popular 1920s version of Twelfth Night. In this rollicking comedy about two sets of twins separated as infants, seeing double leads to hilarity. When Antipholus of Syracuse and his servant Dromio arrive in Ephesus, confusion reigns. Ephesus is the home of their (unknown) twin brothers who happen to have the same names. As wives, lovers, merchants and friends encounter the visitors, mistaken identities lead to merry misunderstandings.

The Zidane & Friends Canadian Soccer Tour features a series of rare exhibition games to be played around Canada with the help of some of Zidane’s friends from his illustrious career.
